‘I never realized linoleum and felt were so similar’, Claudy Jongstra exclaims almost incredulously. ‘The structure is similar, the more layers the better. The materials are natural, with very little waste. The creative process is almost totally controllable and yet every piece is different, unique. And the smell of linseed oil in the plant is reminiscent of the odor of sheep’s wool at home.’ Working with linoleum proved to be an inspiring experience.
Jongstra loves felt, wool, sheep. She shepherds her own herd of 200 for their rare wool. Rams horns give her inspiration. She loves the finely-nerved, almost glasslike texture which she translated into earthy tints including anthracite and ochre.
